HUBERT LAKE WILDFIRE Update: June 5, 2025 at 7:00PM
Evacuation Order Has Been Lifted
Thanks to the efforts of firefighters, heavy equipment and aircraft, this wildfire is now classified as being held. This means that, given current weather conditions and resources, the wildfire is not anticipated to grow past existing boundaries.
The Mandatory Evacuation Order for Westlock County residents along the Pembina River has been lifted. Residents on the WEST side can now also return home but should remain vigilant.
While this is positive process, it’s important to understand that some risks remain in the area. The wildfire threat has decreased, but returning residents should stay alert and take precautions. After a wildfire, there are several hazards that may still be present:
• Some trees may have weakened or burned trunks, limbs, or root balls, making them unstable. These trees can fall without warning, posing a serious safety risk.
• Ash pits are hidden pockets of heat or embers beneath the ground, especially where roots have burned. They can cause serious burns if stepped on.
• Some areas may still have hot spots, which are smoldering material that could reignite under the right conditions.
Please be cautious if you are in the area, especially near damaged trees or burned ground.
There is a lot of work ahead to bring this fire under control. There are still hot spots within the interior that need to be extinguished. This will take time. The fire has burned deeply into the ground in some areas. Firefighters will continue working with the support of heavy equipment and helicopters to contain and put out remaining active areas.
We will be decreasing to daily updates given the status of the fire now. The next official update will be provided June 6, 2025, at 12:00PM. Thank you everyone for your patience and understanding during this incident

The Hubert Lake Wildfire is located 7 km west of Fawcett, 19 km north of the community of Vega, in the Hubert Lake Wildland Provincial Park. The wildfire is currently classified as out of control and is approximately 2,924 ha in size.
Yesterday, winds from the west pushed the wildfire east, bringing it closer to the community of Fawcett. Today, there was no growth on the fire. Helicopters carried out targeted water drops on the east side throughout the day to manage hot spots.
Firefighters made good progress today reinforcing containment lines on the south side of the wildfire, supported by heavy equipment. Containment lines are designed to help prevent wildfire spread, but under windy conditions, the fire can still spot across these barriers.. Cooler temperatures provided favourable conditions for suppression efforts.
